The idea of an automatic institution has also been projected by people who speak in solemn tones about the decline of American Christianity. They have been doing this for a long time. ” But when was that day? Even when churches were established by law, no one could simply open a church and expect it to succeed. Established churches in the colonial South met with the indifference of people from all social classes, who found it remarkably easy to withhold their support. 14 During the nineteenth century, churches that had formerly been established faced heroic struggles to survive and expand.
One of its Victorian steeples disappeared; the other was shortened to blend with the church’s suave new front. The style was still Gothic, but of a different kind. It was the smooth, sophisticated, late Gothic revival mode of the 1920s, all in decorative stone. The institutional emphasis had changed from soul saving to community building; the architectural emphasis, from primitive self-advertisement to the opulence that dares not shout its name. 30 Jackson’s Catholic churches were also revolutionizing their appearance.
