Its job is to determine guilt or innocence. If at least two-thirds of the Senate votes to convict the president on any of the impeachment charges, the president is guilty, and the chief executive of the United States will be removed from office. The Senate may then, by a simple majority, choose to forbid the now former president from ever holding public office again. The verdict in an impeachment trial is final—there is no appeal. In determining what impeachment meant, the framers of the Constitution struggled over one key issue above all else: what does “high crimes and misdemeanors mean”?

Warren was also the chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008–2010). She is considered an expert on consumer financial protection.
