Spoken corpora are usually smaller than written corpora due to the difficulties accessing data, the expense as well as the time constraints of recording and transcribing the naturally-occurring language (McCarthy 1988, 1998). The Corpus of Age and Gender (CAG) explored in this book is a small 90,000 corpus. It consists of two sub-corpora: the Female Adult Corpus (FAC) which consists of three age-differentiated sub-corpora (FAC 20s, FAC 40s and FAC 70s/80s) and the Male Adult Corpus (MAC) which also consists of three age-differentiated sub-corpora (MAC 20s, MAC 40s and MAC 70s/80s).
